Vernon DeLong, Moderator
Sing with me—“Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in His wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.”
“Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith….” (Heb 12:2) Where are we Looking?
On Tuesday, January 12, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Haiti. The center of the quake hit about 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. According to the Red Cross, it is estimated that nearly one-third of Haiti’s population was affected by the quake.
Currently, volunteers are not needed but we anticipate teams being requested in the future. Our partners are on the field making assessments of the situation. At this time the best way to respond continues to be with prayers and financial contributions. You may contribute to “Haiti Earthquake Disaster Relief” through your local church or directly to your state convention, the North American Mission Board, International Mission Board, or the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Online donations may be made at the websites for many of these organizations.
According to the IRS website, taxpayers who itemize deductions on Schedule A will be able to write off charitable donations to Haiti earthquake relief efforts when they file their 2009 taxes this spring under a bill President Barack Obama signed Friday, January 22. Under current law, donors would have to wait until they file their 2010 returns next year to take the deductions. The bill allows donations made by the end of February to be deducted from 2009 returns. The hope is to encourage more donations. The White House announced that the president and first lady Michelle Obama donated $15,000 from their personal bank account to the Haiti relief effort.

The Self Study Team (SST) met January 15, with all members present. The main focus of discussion was to get a picture of what the Association will look like with the new structure. Since there are several options, this will take much prayer, deep thought, and wisdom beyond our capabilities at the moment. Before anything can be presented to the Association, the SST needs to discuss all of the possibilities and take into consideration what would be most suitable for all churches. Please be patient with us, because this is a very responsible task and we don't want to rush into anything. We are honored that you have entrusted this to us and we want to do what would bring glory to God. Our next meeting is January 29. rjo
