How to Know God

In 1999, two independent studies of the health needs of Bedford were done. They reported that the lack of transportation to non-emergency medical services was a serious problem for many of our citizens.

A task force of concerned groups and individuals was formed to address this need. Bedford Ride was the result. It is supported by a coalition of entities and funding bodies and is administered by the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging. It obtains significant volunteer support from independent volunteer leadership boards in various parts of the county. For a list of coalition entitiesand funding bodies, please click here.

 Volunteer Drivers
BEDFORD RIDE is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Bedford citizens by providing better access to non-emergency medical services. Our volunteers are eager to provide disabled, elderly, and low income people in our communities with easy and affordable transportation to and from non-emergency health care services.

Drivers are carefully screened and thoroughly trained persons who are caring, compassionate and considerate. They drive safely, protect passenger confidentiality and treat everyone with respect. All passengers are treated equally and fairly regardless of race, religion, gender, disability, or national origin. Drivers do not provide medical or personal care services.

Other volunteers serve as dispatchers, driver’s escorts and recruiters. If you think you might like to join us in helping your neighbors, please call (540) 587-3315 for more information.

We are looking for neighbors in need of our services. Residents of communities served may be eligible for Bedford Ride non-emergency medical transportation services if they have no other practical means of transportation available and if they are disabled, elderly, or low-income.

Once eligibility has been established and a medical appointment has been made, passengers contact the office staff to arrange for transportation. We generally require that transportation requests be made a minimum of 2 days in advance, but ask that they be made as far in advance as practical. Medical appointments should be scheduled between 8:30 AM and 3:00 PM. Exceptions, due to unusual circumstances, will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Our direct expenses are very low thanks to our many volunteers. However, passengers receiving transportation are asked to pay a small fee to help cover a portion of other operating costs. This

fee is based on the distances traveled and the passenger’s ability to pay.

Passengers who normally require regular medical or personal care will need to bring an appropriate care-giver along to assist them because drivers do not provide medical services.
