"Call to Ministry"

Reggie McNeal insists we often ask the wrong question and miss the more accurate but really tough questions that confront us as churches (and associationseditor’s note). For your consideration:

* Wrong question: How do we “do church” better?
* Tough question: How do we “be church” better? Or how do we deconvert from “churchianity” (institutional religion) to Christianity (the movement)?

* Wrong question: How do we grow this church?
* Tough question: How do we serve this community?

* Wrong question: How do we develop ministers for the church?
* Tough question: How do we develop missionaries to the culture?

* Wrong question: How do we develop church members?””
* Tough question: How do we develop followers of Jesus?

* Wrong question: How do we plan for the future we see?
* Tough question: How do we prepare for the future God sees in us?

* Wrong question: How do we develop leaders for church work?
* Tough question: How do we develop leaders for the Christian movement?

Reggie McNeil serves as the Missional Leadership Specialist for Leadership Network of Dallas, TX. His education includes a B.A. degree from the University of South Carolina and M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees both from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Table for Five...Thousand

Beginning in 2005, and every year since, Susan Batten-Bell has tirelessly and whole-heartedly directed SBA’s Summer Music Camp. We praise God for her commitment to this ministry.

We are also grateful for the many other volunteers who willingly give of their time and talents to touch lives with the joy and significance of music in sharing the gospel. Leaders were: Sandra Locy, choir chimes; Wade Locy, puppets/drama; and Laura Mallory, choreography/drama/choir. Helpers included: Alma Blankenship, Sharon Blankenship, Margaret Chilton, Carolyn Craig, Joyce Hawkins, David Henderson, Pete Kirby, Jerry McDaniel, Rose & Sarah Phillippe, Jackie Sperrazza, Lois Talton, David Thomas, Mary Thompson, and Esther & John Woodford. Colonial Beach Baptist Church loaned their puppet stage and Woods Edge Construction donated materials for stage risers.

Members of the Combo playing for the Friday night program were Tim Echols, Janice Monroe, Liz Batten-Bell, Skyler Spradlin, and Cara Woodroof.

Special thanks to Bedford Baptist Church for graciously allowing us to invade their facilities every year. Most of all, we appreciate the parents for entrusting their precious children to us, making the effort to get them to the camp, and being present at the Friday evening program.

Following are some thoughts from Susan about this year‘s camp:

We had a great time in Music Camp the last week of July. Many thanks to all our volunteers who helped; from snack packers, to music preparation, to the final musical presentation on Friday night.

We learned several lessons from this story of Jesus feeding the 5,000.

* God will stay beside me and always guide me.
* The first will be last and the last will be first.
* Be a servant.
* When God calls, say “Yes”!
* Everyone is Somebody in God’s eyes.
* If you give all that you have to Jesus—he can make something great of it.
* When we are starving in body and soul, God can fill our lives with JOY.
* Small things done with great love, can change the world.

This year we invited our community churches to participate with us and we had representatives from over 20 churches in our area. We enrolled 43 campers for the week. Thanks for the opportunity of working with your children.
